In a world where business often feels like a race to the top, the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce is charting a different path—one paved with partnership, not rivalry.

"Collaboration over competition" is more than just a catchphrase in my new role as the Chamber leader, it’s a personal philosophy shaped by years in the networking business. I believe we can all do more together than individually, even if we are competing for the same dollar. As an insurance agent, more of my leads came from other insurance agents than any other type of person.

It is a perspective grounded in the belief that every individual—and every business—has something unique to offer. We are all built to do something better than anything else in our wheelhouse. So, working together far outweighs facing the daily grind alone.

That spirit of unity isn’t just about business success—it’s about community revival.

The same works for a community that is trying to rebuild their town. We all need to pull together to help tourists have a great experience and want to spend money while they are here, and want to come back.

It’s the simple, daily interactions that make the difference. A local accountant chatting with a tourist at lunch might offer a recommendation that’s more persuasive than any ad. The tourist asks questions and wants to know the best place to shop for a specific gift, and they’ll listen to the accountant far more than the person who owns the store.

That’s how we all lift each other up.

And speaking of lifting spirits, this month’s Chamber Business Spotlight shines on a small shop that’s doing just that—one scoop at a time.

The Hop Ice Cream offers A Sweet Taste of Community

The Hop Ice Cream in Black Mountain is more than just a dessert shop—it’s a local gem that perfectly embodies the Chamber’s collaborative mindset. Known for its inventive flavors like Hokey Pokey, Nanner Pudding, and the ever-whimsical Unicorn Poop, The Hop partners with local farmers and restaurants to craft unique, community-inspired creations.

Beyond the ice cream, what really makes The Hop stand out is its atmosphere. Staffed by vibrant young people whose personalities are as memorable as the flavors they scoop. The shop has become a go-to spot for families, friends, and date nights alike.

My friends and I stopped by The Hop tonight, and we weren’t the only ones—it was buzzing with life. It’s the perfect place for the last stop before the end of a date, a reward for excellent behavior, or just a scoop to brighten your day.

Even better? They’re open until 9 p.m. every night of the week.

As Black Mountain continues to grow and rebuild, places like The Hop—and the people behind them—show how sweet success can be when shared.
