Warlassies score win for seniors

Owen soccer shuts out Avery, 3-0, in regular season home finale

There were a few tears shed before the Owen Warlassies took the field, April 26, as the team recognized five seniors who were playing their final home game of the regular season.

Eighty minutes later, the team was all smiles following a 3-0 victory over visiting Avery.

The Warlassies improved to 8-2 with the win, setting up a Wednesday, April 28 finale at Madison. Owen (6-2) enters the contest in second place in the Western Highlands Conference against the Patriots (6-1), who defeated the Warlassies, 4-3, April 12. An Owen victory would place the teams in a tie atop the conference.

Rachel Graham, Ellery Parmenter, Sophie Murphy, Lauren Wright and Ava Yurchack were introduced before the game, welcomed to the field by teammates, head coach David Fiest and his staff The seniors were escorted by family to midfield, where they received gifts from the team, including personalized Owen soccer shirts.

The Warlassies played only three matches in 2020. The team was undefeated in the WHC in 2019, when it it advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs before finishing the season 17-3-1.
