A hot start to the football season for the Owen Warhorses was doused on a soggy field at Mitchell High School, March 12.

The Mountaineers hosted the Warhorses Friday night, as both teams entered the Western Highlands Conference matchup with 2-0 records. But, the home team would score early and often in the 42-14 victory.

The Warhorse defense was stout on Mitchell’s opening drive, forcing a Mountaineers punt after three downs. An Owen fumble on the return set up a quick touchdown for Mitchell, which would jump out to a 14-0 lead early in the contest.

The Warhorses answered in the opening quarter when senior Caleb Scott found junior Jacob Price for a short pass that the wide receiver would take up the sideline for a touchdown. Price would score again in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a tipped pass.

Mitchell dominated at the line of scrimmage, where its size and strength proved difficult for the athleticism of the Warhorses to contend with on the wet field. The Mountaineers capitalized on Owen missteps, picking up their seventh straight victory against the visiting team.

The Warhorses will travel to Polk, Friday, March 19, for their second WHC game of the season. The Wolverines will bring an identical 2-1 record into the contest.

Owen upset previously unbeaten Polk last season in a homecoming game at Warhorse Stadium. The Wolverines are coming off a 53-7 victory over Madison.
