Valley Hope Church in Swannanoa is hosting a food drive for Owen Middle School through Monday, April 20.

A Swannanoa church is calling on the community to help feed local students.

Valley Hope Church, located at 115 Rockdale Avenue, is collecting non-perishable food items through Monday, April 20, to be delivered to Owen Middle School.

“Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Owen Middle School has not been able to receive their normal deliveries of MANNA food bags for students in need,” the church said in a press release announcing the food drive. “We want to help those in our community that count on getting some of their food from OMS and the United Way.”

The church has placed a blue container outside of the doors to its sanctuary to collect the donated items. Canned vegetables, soup, chili, peanut butter and dried noodles are among the items requested.

The items will be delivered to the school by the church.

“We used to meet at the middle school for a couple of years,” said Jeremiah Swann, the Church Life Director for Valley Hope. “So they are near and dear to our hearts.”

The church was founded in 2004 by a group of students and alumni from Montreat College and operated as Isight Church until changing its name to Valley Hope in 2016. In 2019, the church joined with the Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church, making the building its permanent home.
