Black Mountain motorists traveling between the Public Safety building and Town Square are navigating a new traffic pattern, Jan. 31, after Honeycutt Street was converted to a one-way road.

The short stretch of pavement, which contains parking spaces for the adjacent park and the nearby fire and police departments, is now accessible only from Richardson Boulevard, driving west to Montreat Road.

Results of a recent study that collected and analyzed data on the usage of the street were presented to the town council in November, by Colin Kinton, senior project manager for the consulting firm - Traffic Planning and Design, Inc. The research found the variety of uses, including parking for the Town Square and splash pad, and as an exit point for responding emergency vehicles, created opportunities for incidents in which drivers were utilizing the street to avoid nearby traffic.

The recommendation to convert the street to a one-way traffic pattern was a “safe solution” to potential conflict opportunities, according to TPD. The town council voted 4-1 in favor of the change.

Arrows now indicate the new flow of traffic on Honeycutt, while a temporary digital sign facing Montreat Road displays its designation as a one-way street.
