The Owen Warhorses brought a five-game winning streak to Mitchell County, Sept. 15, as they took on their first Western Highlands Conference opponent of the season.
They needed only one half of soccer to pick up their sixth straight victory.
Owen scored early and often against the Mountaineers, jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first half. The game ended at halftime, due to the NCHSAA mercy rule, which terminates matches once the goal differential of 9 or more is reached before halftime.
Senior Jason Gun put the Warhorses on the scoreboard at the 5:04 mark with header in front of the Mitchell goal, and the lead was extended to 2-0 minutes later. Owen scored 4 goals within the first 10 minutes of play.
Junior Nino Luther increased the lead to 4-0 in the 11th minute. He went on to score back-to-back goals minutes later, leading the Warhorses with 3 in the contest.
Freshman Davis Kendall scored the first and second goals of his high school career, blasting Owen’s 12th and final goal before the half.
The Warhorses have not lost a match since opening the season with a 2-1 loss on the road against Smoky Mountain. Owen has outscored its opponents, 36-6, in its last six contests.
The reigning WHC champions will attempt to extend their winning streak, Monday, Sept. 20, when they host Mountain Heritage.
