A free workshop, offered by the Swannanoa Valley Art League, will allow emerging artists to design a planter using recycled plastic.

Re-Useful Creatures, which will take place in the Maffett Education Room in the Red House Gallery, from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, is open to children ages 6 - 10. Space is limited to eight attendees.

The one-day program allows children to design and create planters, using discarded plastic bottles, paint and other creative accessories. Plants and soil will be provided at no cost. Participants will take their completed projects home at the end of the class.

The event is sponsored by the Swannanoa Black Mountain Kiwanis Club, and children are asked to bring a smock or wear clothes suitable for painting. Registration can be completed by selecting the workshop page under the education tab on redhousegallery.org.

The Red House Gallery and Studios, located at 101 Cherry Street, is the home of the SVAL, a local nonprofit organization with a mission to provide art education and inspire area youth to pursue creative interests.
