The Owen Warhorse soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2021 season, Aug. 18, against Enka.

The reigning Western Highlands Conference champions posted a convincing 3-1 win over the visiting Jets.

Enka jumped out to an early lead in opening minutes of the contest with a free kick that slipped past Owen goalie Nolan Swoap. It would be the only goal allowed by Swoap in the match.

The Warhorses evened the score minutes later on a powerful shot by Elijah Caro.

Owen took the lead over the Jets with just under 8 minutes remaining in the first half when Nino Luther broke away from Enka defenders and blasted a goal from the right side of the net.

The Warhorses carried their 1-goal advantage into the half, before senior Jason Gun extended the lead on a penalty kick in the ninth minute of the second half. Owen held onto that 3-1 advantage through the remainder of the match.

Wednesday’s game was one of four home contests scheduled for the Warhorses to open the season. Head coach David Fiest and his team who opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Smoky Mountain, will host Brevard at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 23.
