A section of U.S. 70, between Swannanoa and Black Mountain, was closed for approximately three hours, Dec. 26, as multiple agencies responded to reports of a suspicious package in the area.

Personnel from the Black Mountain Fire and Police Departments and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.

Officials closed the stretch of highway between Lytle Cove Road and Grovestone Road, rerouting traffic to Old U.S. 70. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.

“The situation is being handled by multiple agencies and is under control,” Black Mountain Fire Chief John Coffey said. “There is no threat to the public.”
