The arrival of a 95-unit affordable housing apartment complex in Swannanoa will be celebrated virtually beginning at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The East Haven Homecoming, hosted by Mountain Housing Opportunities, will officially welcome residents to the new development on U.S. 70, west of Riverwood Road. The development addresses the shortage of affordable housing in the area.
MHO is a private nonprofit organization, founded in 1988, that builds and improves homes for low-income county residents, including working families, retirees and people with disabilities. East Haven will provide one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments to tenants with an annual household income at, or below, 60% of the median income in Buncombe County.
The primary funding source for the four-story building, which was the first approved under the Buncombe County Community-Oriented Development program that allows greater residential density for property offering affordable units, came through federal tax credits. The county provided $2.2 million for the project as well.
The East Haven Homecoming will commemorate the completion of the project, which broke ground in the summer of 2019. MHO began accepting applications for the units in the spring of 2020.
