A popular downtown Black Mountain restaurant has announced a new name, look and menu.

The Black Mountain Ale House, at 117 Cherry Street, is rebranding as Black Mountain Kitchen + Ale House, putting food at the forefront of the operation with an emphasis on fried chicken.

Chefs Greg Buchanan and Brian Hough made it their mission to create original recipes for fried chicken that include Calcutta Hot – an Indian spiced version of Nashville Hot – and authentic Southern fried chicken, soaked for a day and a half in a pickle juice and buttermilk brine. Both versions come in half and whole chicken portions. The restaurant is also offering wings, with sauces like lager BBQ, hot & hoppy and sweet chili stout.

Buchanan and Hough have experience at the helm of some noteworthy restaurants — Hough at the Stable Café at Biltmore Estate and the Sierra Nevada Taproom and Buchanan at Rezaz — and their marriage of skill, and recipes, has resulted in Southern-style gourmet comfort food.

“It’s all about the rejuvenation of creativity and the soothing comfort that food provides when it’s made with the best intentions,” Hough said.

Community was the cornerstone of the original Black Mountain Ale House. With the new name, the cornerstone remains the same. Residents and visitors who come to Black Mountain Kitchen + Ale House will still find the same “hey, y’all!” environment in a familiar place.

The restaurant will continue featuring a rotating tap of microbrews and craft cocktails that are unique and always changing. Black Mountain Kitchen + Ale House will continue to “provide a sense of community and belonging to every person wo walks through the door,” a philosophy the business has employed since opening its doors nine years ago, it said in a press release announcing the changes.
