Construction on a project that will connect the sidewalk on Charlotte Street to the existing pedestrian infrastructure on East State Street will begin around May 17, the Town of Black Mountain announced this week.
The sidewalk extension should be completed by the end of June, according to the town.
Funded in the 2022-23 budget, the $65,000 project will complete a pedestrian connection between the Flat Creek Greenway and U.S. 70. The crosswalk and sidewalk project will complete the section leading to federal transportation project EB5547A, one of two pieces of what was previously known as the River Walk Greenway project.
The existing Charlotte Street sidewalk connects to the Flat Creek Greenway, extending west along First Street and east to Village Way. The extension will include a crosswalk at the intersection of Village Way and Charlotte Street, leading to a sidewalk on the west side of Charlotte Street.
Construction of the sidewalk will overlap with a separate project, funded by Black Mountain Schools PTO, which is building a track around the field at Black Mountain Primary School.
