The Black Mountain Center for the Arts will welcome Asheville artist Christine Longoria to the Upper Gallery. The show is titled Colors: Land and Sea, and features 32 abstract works in oil from the talented artist.
The exhibit opens from 5 - 6:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 6, and runs through Friday, Aug. 27. The Upper Gallery is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Longoria is a founding member of the Asheville Gallery of Art, and displays work at galleries throughout N.C. She has work hanging in many private homes and corporations throughout the United States. Until 2015, she was represented by the American Folk Gallery as their only trained artist.
Longoria is a graduate of Trinity University, where her mentor was a student of Hans Hoffman. She was greatly influenced by him, and Richard Dibenkorn. She has a graduate degree from Western Carolina University.
“I approach a canvas without a subject in mind,” she said. “I make marks. The act of applying color and shape to the canvas moves me to the next mark. I recognize and then begin to see the unfolding. It’s a mysterious process that I hope will encourage the viewer to see more deeply. It will change the way they observe with enlightened eyes.”
BMCA executive director Lori Cozzi is one of the half dozen members of the gallery selection committee.
“Christine’s work stood out to us among the many submissions that come our way. We are happy to support her work with this solo show,” Cozzi said.
