Why limit the results of your pumpkin carving skills to your front porch when the entire town could enjoy your artistry?
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is offering the community a safe new way to celebrate Halloween. The nonprofit organization will hold the inaugural Light Up State Street — a community-wide pumpkin carving contest.
All ages are invited to participate in this socially distanced activity. Participants can register at the BMCA website; the registration fee for children (under 15) is $5. Adults pay $10 to register for the contest, which will feature pumpkins from your community’s local farmer or pumpkin patch. Those who enter can create a theme, design and carve a pumpkin and then drop it off at the Arts Center between 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27 or Wednesday, Oct. 28. between 10am and 5pm at the Arts Center.
The submissions will be displayed beginning Thursday, Oct. 29, when all registered pumpkins will be illuminated and displayed along State Street for the public to enjoy either on foot or from the car. Winners will be chosen by age group in four different categories: scariest, funniest, most creative and art(ist) inspired. Prizes will be offered in each category.
As members of the community seek an alternative to trick-or-treating, or look to extend the celebration of the Halloween season, Light Up State Street offers them an opportunity to share their pumpkin carving efforts with the rest of the community.
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located at 225 West State Street. For more information visit blackmountainarts.org or call 828-669-0930.
