The Asheville Christian Academy women’s basketball team traveled to the Queen City over the weekend and reinforced their status as the favorites to win the NCISAA 3A championship. The Lions won the title a year ago and have added a wealth of talent for the 2020-2021 season.

The new look Lions took the floor against Carmel Christian Academy on Friday night. Carmel Christian kept things close in the first half but in the second frame ACA imposed their will. The Lions went on a second half scoring spree outpacing Carmel 36-10 and cruised to the 55-26 victory.

Emma Larios led the Lions with 16 points, while Elizabeth Harrington added 13 points. Katie Alexander scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the contest while EP Sluder added 6 points and 4 assists.

On Saturday, the Lions traveled to Hickory Grove Christian Academy. ACA jumped out to a 17-8 first quarter advantage and never looked back dominating the game throughout. The Lions won in routine fashion 51-29.

Sluder tallied 16 points and finished with 4 assists and 3 steals. Emma Larios added 10 points, 7 assists and 4 steals while Alexander chipped in 6 points and 5 steals. ACA is now 2-1 on the young season.

The ACA men’s team did not fare as well as the girls squad. Playing without two starters and mired in offensive struggles the Lions dropped two more contests this weekend. Against Carmel Christian the Lions held an 18-13 halftime lead but gave up 48 second half points and fell 61-49. Collin Mills led the Lions against Carmel with 23 points while Max Rogers added 12 points.

In Saturday’s game against Hickory Grove, the Lions got off to another early lead but after the opening minutes struggled to find any rhythm offensively. Isaiah Joyner nailed five three pointers in the loss and led the team in scoring with 16 points.

The weekend losses drop the Lions to 0-5 on the season.

Both boys and girls basketball teams travel to Knoxville Catholic on Tuesday of this week before the Thanksgiving break begins.
